 Before Diving In

Jessie: What are the top 3 things you wish you could change about your teaching job? I would bet some serious money that more time is somewhere on your list. If it was, you’re in the right place.

Joel and I have been crafting and refining our workflows for years. Our goal has always been to pack the day with the most important things and drop all the unnecessary baggage. We put together a framework to help you create (or fine-tune) your own flow and hopefully stop all that sprinting around. Heck, you may even feel “done” with work at the end of the day. Imagine that!

Joel: Welcome to today’s episode! 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow. This is part 1 of a 3-part series. Today we’ll be focusing on the first 2 steps. We’ll be going nice and slow with lots of examples, so you can intentionally put each step into place without feeling overwhelmed. Let’s jump right in!

Step 1: What's Important? Why?

Joel: What aspects of teaching bring you the most joy? What is most important for your students’ success? What are you really good at (utilizing technology, communicating with families, developing systems, engaging lessons/units, finding awesome read alouds, etc)? Make a list.

Step 2: Focus Your Time and Energy

Jessie: List all your job requirements and approximately how long they take each day/week. Don’t overthink this step. When I first did this I had no clue how long everything took me. You just want to give yourself somewhere to start - so ballpark the time.

Action Step

Joel: Now it’s your turn. Take out that notebook or a Google Doc and complete steps 1 and 2. For a more in-depth explanation of each step and our personal examples, listen to the podcast episode >> S2E19: 6 Steps To A Killer Workflow (Part 1). The episode is only 15 minutes, and it's worth every second!
